The Most Common Anti-ageing Skincare Mistakes

1. Not wearing sunscreen whenever you are in the sun—no matter how long that may be.

Did you know that around 90% of skin ageing is due to the effects of the sun? Sun exposure is responsible for most of the visible ageing of your skin—far more than all other factors combined.

If you only apply sunscreen on sunny days or at the beach, you’re not giving your skin the best chance at looking younger, longer! But do not rely on sunscreen for sun protection - in the hottest part of the day, cover up or avoid the sun completely.

Here are some of our favourite sun protection tips:

  • It’s imperative to wear a separate sunscreen under your makeup. Do not rely on foundation with SPF.
  • Do not make your own sunscreen at home.
  • Do not under apply sunscreen. To overcome this, apply sunscreen twice every time you apply.
  • If you work in an office, apply sunscreen twice a day.
  • Everyone should wear sunscreen, no matter what your skin colour is.
  • Don't mix sunscreen with makeup. Sunscreen is a seperate layer.
  • Use sunscreen creams - not powder or sprays. Creams distribute more evenly across the skin.

2. Over-exfoliating

Exfoliation has become one of the most dominant activities in skin care and is considered by many to be beneficial as it refreshes the skin and removes dead cells. All exfoliation does - is remove the top layer of the skin - thus you do not want to do this too often.

People that exfoliate daily have reduced tolerance to active products and more redness and experience irritation. Less lipids and stratum corneum (top layer of the skin) protection on the skin is clearly proven to increase ultraviolet radiation damage which is the main cause of ageing.

Be gentle with exfoliation - whether you physically or chemically exfoliate. There’s a whole cottage industry of people who have been literally burned by exfoliation chemicals so please be careful and gentle when doing this. You have very important oils in your top layer of skin and you don't want to exfoliate that skin off too often. Exfoliate at the most 2 times a week. Even once a week is great.

3. Applying too many products with potent ingredients at the same time.

When it comes to anti-ageing products, some people think that if a little is good, then more must be better. So, they start using three types of exfoliants at the same time, followed by a serum with a high percentage vitamin C, and then a high-concentration retinol moisturiser followed by a skin brightening product. Even for the most durable skin types, applying these products all at once is overkill. It’s not that they don’t all have a place in a skincare routine, but instead of slathering them on all at once, they can be alternated between your morning and evening skincare routines or applied on alternate days. And no one needs to apply three exfoliants at the same time!

4. Eating an unhealthy diet

The research is clear: Antioxidants are vital to your health whether you eat them or apply them on your skin. They’re one of the most important group of skincare ingredients for diminishing signs of ageing you see in the mirror.

Diets high in sugar can damage elastin and collagen molecules in the skin, increasing wrinkles and sagging. Increased blood sugar levels act as an "ageing accelerator" that can cause wrinkles.

At blame is a natural process that's known as glycation, in which the sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called advanced glycation end products (or, appropriately, AGEs for short). The more sugar you eat, the more AGEs you develop.

5. Stress, Lack of Sleep and Smoking

Skincare goes beyond being skin deep. Poor lifestyle choices like long-term stress, lack of sleep and smoking undo all of your skincare choices by accelerating the ageing process.

 6. Neglecting your Neck

You may be making all the right anti-aging choices for your face, but forgetting all about your neck in the meantime. Often the skin on our neck and décolletage belie our age, getting crepey or wrinkly earlier than it should because we forget to bring the SPF down onto these areas. Whatever you do to your face, you should do to your neck and décolletage too. The question many women ask is do they need a special décolletage (chest) or neck cream? The answer is absolutely not! That is a complete waste of money. This is what you can do to keep your neck and chest looking as young as possible. Consistently use the same products on your neck - that you would normally use on your face. During the day, apply sunscreen to your neck. Many people neglect their neck when applying sunscreen.

We hope these tips helped you out on your anti-ageing skincare journey.
